Arthrodesis (Joint Fusion)

What is an Arthrodesis?

Arthrodesis, or joint fusion, is a relatively common procedure performed in animals to restore a functional shape and remove pain. It may be performed to treat injury or severe joint disease. Typically, some form of bone graft or substitute is placed in the joint space, and the joint is immobilised with implants until the bones fuse.

Prognosis:

The prognosis for good quality of life, without pain, is excellent once healing is complete; however, it takes, on average, 8-12 weeks for complete healing. There is a risk of wound breakdown, irritation due to the plate, infection or failure of fusion, which may necessitate further surgery.
